Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

Your permanent teeth are supposed to last the rest of your life, but sometimes we may have to pull a tooth to preserve your overall oral health. Common reasons include:

• Severe tooth decay or infection — While we will try to save your tooth with a root canal treatment, if your tooth is too badly decayed or infected to be restored, we may need to pull it.

• Teeth crowding — The size of the jaw and teeth can lead to crowding, resulting in crooked teeth. By removing a tooth or two, it provides space for the other teeth to become properly aligned with the help of braces.

• Dental trauma — Usually due to accidents and injuries from contact sports, dental trauma can result in tooth fractures, loose teeth, and bone tissue injuries. Extraction may be necessary in certain cases.

• Periodontal disease — Untreated periodontal diseases can cause the teeth to become loose, which may necessitate extraction.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are typically safe and simple procedures. To prepare your tooth for extraction, we will numb your mouth with local anesthesia. For your comfort, we may also recommend laughing gas sedation to make your procedure as pain-free as possible.

Once your tooth has been removed, we will pack the socket with gauze to help stop the bleeding. We may place stitches to close the extraction site depending on your needs.

We can recommend or prescribe pain relievers as necessary to reduce any swelling and discomfort after the procedure. Your recovery will take a few days. Be sure to avoid solid foods, and follow all post-operative instructions to ensure a comfortable recovery.
